I think Velocity is excellent at adapting. In the technology industry, you have to move with the times to keep current with product offerings. As a company, we are obsessed with customer service and can adapt our services to meet the customers’ needs. If we don’t currently offer something a customer asks for, no problem, we will find a solution. Velocity has also adapted from being a small company to a much larger one, which felt like it happened overnight. During COVID-19, when many companies were struggling, Velocity transitioned to a remote workforce smoothly and kept business running. The company is quick on its feet and isn’t afraid to change focus or direction if it needs to.
I joined Velocity for a chance to start a career at a company with enormous potential. Velocity was small when I was offered a position and sounded like they were on a path to success. I was excited to learn something new and be a part of a newer company. I joined Velocity as part of the accounts payable team and worked up to the accounts payable manager position.
After the company had gotten significantly larger, we had different needs that required attention. This was when I decided to change my path within the company and take an opportunity to help others navigate our software platforms and help manage time and attendance. Though I didn’t start in Velocity’s human resources department, I was drawn to it because we needed to develop something due to our rapid growth. I knew there would be many forthcoming opportunities in that area of the business and it would be a great way to get more involved with the company that I’ve grown to love and am proud to work for.
As the payroll and HRIS specialist my days never really look quite the same which keeps things interesting and fun. Some of my time is spent assisting employees with the various HR systems we use. Other days I am focused on document management and processing payroll. When I am not focusing on those areas, I support the rest of the HR team with the day-to-day operations or any HR initiatives. Also, I’m part of our company’s outreach committee – Velocity Cares. This gives me the opportunity to help organize events our employees can participate in to help our community.
What surprised me the most about Velocity was how flexible they are. Work-life balance has become more important each year that I’ve been with the company. This is something I appreciate about Velocity and is a huge benefit. They have been flexible with my family’s needs surrounding school and doctor’s appointments — and even being able to work from home part of the time. It makes a world of difference not having to stress about those types of situations and knowing I can go to leadership and have a conversation about what could be helpful for me. It is easy being good to a company that is good to you.
My favorite part of my role is working with so many different people within the company and having a part in the changes our department makes for the benefit of all employees. I get to work with all levels of employees in the company and from all various departments, which I think gives me the chance to really learn about the company from different points of view. Each workday is a little different from the one before, bringing new challenges and opportunities to learn. It is rewarding to see the HR department’s efforts appreciated by the employees as we work to make Velocity an employer of choice.
